Overview

Neurologist/Neurology (derived from Greek words neuron – “nerve” and logia – “science“). Is the science of the illnesses of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (peripheral nerves and muscles).

The border to the psychiatry is partly fluent. In other words, the neurology deals more with the hardware, the psychiatry more with the software.

Neurological Diseases

Importance

To figure out the reasons for disturbance, the two most important tools used for a neurologist are the detailed patient’s history and the neurological assessment. Depending on the clinical manifestation. Different investigations follow for example neurophysiologic studies as nerve conduction velocity, electromyography, evoked potentials and electroencephalography, MRI of brain and spine or laboratory. Apart from this, close collaboration is done with the eye specialistENT specialistdentistcardiologist, and psychiatrist.

Most neurological diseases can be treated conservatively, that means with medications, physiotherapy, ergotherapy, logotherapy and lifestyle modifications. The patient is always seen holistic. If conservatively treatment fails or is not a first-line treatment, the patient is referred to Neurosurgeon.
